Last week we did Ellis Island Day! We felt the same feelings young immigrants felt coming through Ellis Island, but I got sent to quarantined two times! I also got sent to the court. If you don't pass you get deported (Not really.) I thought it was ridiculous when I heard the person in front of me get quarantined for not knowing the right football team! I mean the Falcons and the Patriots did not even exist back then! I also never even explained the bus ride, so I got first class and most people got steerage, but there were so little first class people that we rode a small bus and it would take three of the buses we rode in to make a whole bus.

On the way there we listened to a teacher read the diary of someone and their boat trip to Ellis Island, but when the teachers weren't reading the bus was silent. In fact the teachers said that we could talk but still no one said a word. I was the first person to speak. I asked Tyler what his boat company was called, but I spoke in such a weak voice no one heard me.  So I asked again in a louder voice. Tyler heard me and said " S.S. Sinclair." When we arrived at "Ellis Island" we saw the "Statue Of Liberty" (Which was actually just Dr. Nary dressed in green.) When we went in to "Ellis Island" we were told to wait outside while they got ready. We waited for a long time. Then Mrs.Brake asked me if I could hold the door for other teachers. So I did.

There were five different stations. One tested your math. If you got so many wrong, you would get sent back. There was a snack station, but I didn't go there until I was done with three stations. The medical stations was the first station you went to. They checked you for lice and checked your mouth to check for smallpox. We also got these little tiny pencils and notebooks. At the end of our journey we sang We, The People.

Thanksgiving Feast

We had a Thanksgiving Feast with our reading buddies. They are first graders in Mrs. Layton's class. For the Thanksgiving feast our reading buddies made applesauce. We made sweet potatoes. Kali made brownies and Colin made muffins. We also made hats for Indians and for Pilgrims. We had fun.

HSS Olympics

6/18/15
It's Olympics Day!Yhaaaaaaaaaaaa! Olympics Day was awesome. The girls won tug-o- war. At the carnival they had a thing that tells you how fast you throw a ball. I got up to 33 mph. Also we had the sundae challenge. Some people didn't get everything, but I hoped that everyone did get everything.

Sundae Challenge Week

Last week we were trying to wrap up the sundae challenge. Unfortunately, a lot of people didn't  finish. Some people are on eights, which is the last one you have to do. Then you're done. If you finish early you have to do mixed, then elevens, then finally twelves.  A lot of people got stuck on nines. It must have been annoying. Tyler M and I are on twelves. Jon was the first one done! I'm not surprised.

Lots of subs

Last week we had a lot of subs because Mr. Brake was in the hospital. We made a get well card for him. We all wrote our names in the card. Some of us wrote get well messages. All of the subs were very nice. The next week Mrs.Brake got back.

Ellis Island

This week is Ellis Island week. We have been getting ready for this day! We have been getting prepared for it by bringing: pillows, snacks, and stuffies. We have been having a lot of fun preparing; we have been so excited. This week we have also been learning about time and shapes during calendar time.

We are almost at Ellis Island. We are all from different countries. Many of us were upset that we can't talk to our friends today, because they are from a different country of origin. Today we all dressed old style with perfect choices of clothes. When everyone walked in, I loved the choices of clothes. Many of them were so unique.

First we went outside and hopped on the ship (Bus) with excitement. I sat next to Sumner and gladly he had a pink dot, so I could talk to him. Many of the people missed their friends, but some people did not follow the no talking to other colors rule. It was really annoying me and many people in the class keep shushing classmates everywhere. Everyone got so mad, because they wanted to talk to their friends, but those really nice people followed the rules. I was really upset because some of us got a color that was not close to their friends, but some people got a weird color and said they could speak to anyone when we arrived.

We all laughed in surprised because Ms. Nary was posing as Miss Liberty when we got off the ship (bus.) We made one big line; first class in the front, second class in the middle, and the worst class, steerage where people had to squished each other with three to a seat. They were last when we walked. We saw friends, parents, moms, and dads. When we got inside we got our little list that we put on our necks. It had our color and the stations on it. I think everyone's favorite station was the last one where we became real citizens.

I got mad when I had to stand at the girls’ bathroom for 5-10 minutes waiting, but it had stalls. I thought it was just one bathroom with a toilet and never opened the door until some adult told me I could go in. So I did and I was mad and the only reason was because I did not want to walk in on someone, so I wasted a lot of time.

All of us went to the judge for weird reasons. Mine was because no one was here to pick me up at the Kissing Post. I was confused that I could not go out on my own and what I though was really funny. Azhelia got sent for looking too serious. We had so much fun, but some kids' parents kept coming over to see what was going on, like my mom. At the stations, some of them were fun, like the puzzle one and the flash cards.

Now we are at the last and final inspection. I got a little confused about the questions, but I passed. I felt so awesome when I got a sticker and I felt like a champion. Then I went to the station where me and many people became citzens. When we were done everyone was so happy and tired, but we did it. Then we waited and some had snacks and played with beanie boos. Then we sung. We also did the Pledge of Alligience. After that we left. We all had a amazing time and were so tired and sleepy. I heard someone had lice during the lice check. One of the parents found it.We all had a fun time and wanted to do everything over again.

Getting Ready for Ellis Island.

We have been getting ready for Ellis Island. We had to pick out 5 things to take with us. We had to prepare our birth certificate, our passport, our money, and our letter of recommendation. We had to talk to the ship officer about what we were doing in America. I hope I am ready.

Earth Day

Friday, April 24th, was the day we celebrated Earth Day. The first activity we did was to learn about lobsters in the cafeteria.  After eating our snack, we went to the gym and heard three presentations from the Seacoast Science Center. They taught us how to put rubber bands on lobster claws, and what to do if we found a seal washed up on the beach. we also got to see starfish and other sea animals in the touch tank. After recess and lunch, we went to clean the front garden. The tools we used were rakes, shovels, wheel barrows, and hoes. We planted flowers and spread out the mulch in the garden. Our last activity was making rain sticks in the music room. We covered cardboard tubes with foil then put rice in the tubes. Earth day was an amazing day to have fun!
